1 CORINTHIANS — Part 11

I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.

1 Corinthians 9:22b

Temptations are, by nature, difficult. And through all of them we are enticed, not only to sin, but to serve some of “god” instead of Him.

Lord help us!

God does, indeed help in this. He promises to not allow us to be tempted beyond our ability to resist and will always provide a way out of the situation. We have only to look to Him and what He provides!

Thank You, Lord!

1 CORINTHIANS — Part 10

I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.

1 Corinthians 9:22b

The issue of last week in discussing food takes a broader tack this week as we see how to examine all of our actions, not for our benefit, but for the benefit (and possible salvation!) of others.

This should be our main concern and focus as we do (or do not) act in any particular way.

We are to do it all “for the sake of the gospel” of Jesus!

1 CORINTHIANS — Part 9

I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.

1 Corinthians 9:22b

It was common in Corinth for food that was previously sacrificed to idols to be sold in the marketplace purchase and use.

For some it seemed grossly improper for a believer to purchase and eat any of this food. For other believers, it was not an issue.

Paul tells us the bigger issue is the conscience of our brother and sister, not the food!

Scriptures

  • 1 Corinthians 8

1 CORINTHIANS — Part 8

I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.

1 Corinthians 9:22b

Paul and the early Church had in their mind that Jesus could return at any moment, so all energies should be focused on sharing Him and living in His Word.

We’ve lost that sense of urgency!

When that is present, we see priorities differently and don’t get complacent, taking God, His Word, and His blessings for granted.

They can still be enjoyed, but He must still be our priority!

Scriptures

  • 1 Corinthians 7:17-40

1 CORINTHIANS — Part 7

I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.

1 Corinthians 9:22b

Marriage takes work It takes communication. It takes sacrifice. It takes love.

None of this should be a surprise, but knowing it and applying it are two different things.

Couples need to be there for each other – consistently and humbly!

When we get puffed-up in our relationships and demand our own ways instead of submitting in love and respect to each other, bad seeds are planted and start to take hold.

Let this not be!

  • 1 Corinthians 11:1-16

1 CORINTHIANS — Part 6

I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.

1 Corinthians 9:22b

Sexual immorality was rampant in Corinth.

We can relate! It is all around us!

But they weren’t only surrounded by it, some believers were engaging in it and reveling in it!

Let this not be so!

This sin is certainly rampant and must be dealt with – with firmness and, when there is contrition, in grace. It cannot be ignored – for the good of the person struggling with it as well as the others in the Church.

Scriptures

  • 1 Corinthians 5
  • 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

1 CORINTHIANS — Part 5

I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.

1 Corinthians 9:22b

Believers taking other believers to a secular court to decide matters.

Shameful!

Believers should be working together to sort these things out and, even if they end up being ‘wronged,’ their brother or sister in the Faith may be blessed; so it’s not a bad outcome!

Besides this, ALL of us have been in the wrong before God and He showed His grace to us.

We should keep that in mind when dealing with our brothers and sisters!

Scriptures

  • 1 Corinthians 6:1–11

1 CORINTHIANS — Part 4

I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.

1 Corinthians 9:22b

The Greeks valued the search and discussion for wisdom highly. Jews looked for signs of God’s power. People today may seek similar things and see in Christianity “foolishness” that meets neither.

But “Christ crucified” achieves those things and far more through the power and wisdom the Holy Spirit gives that the world doesn’t see!

Praise the Lord for HIS power, wisdom, and salvation through what the world sees as ‘foolishness’!

Scriptures

  • 1 Corinthians 1:18-2:16

1 CORINTHAINS — Part 3

I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.

1 Corinthians 9:22b

The Corinthians thought themselves superior and able to divine for themselves God’s will and Word, neglecting the teaching of the servant God sent to them (like Paul).

They were “puffed-up” instead of humbling themselves in hearing and learning from those God sent.

May we not be so arrogant and honor those God sends over us!

Scriptures

  • 1 Corinthians 4

1 CORINTHAINS — Part 2

I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.

1 Corinthians 9:22b

Divisions and conflict in the Church have been around since the beginning; often in very pronounced and terrible ways.

The Corinthian believers weren’t immune from this sin and neither are we.

It is a situation that harms, not just believers, but unbelievers who see it, too.

What a terrible witness!

Let us put off these divisions and strive for the unity that is ours through Jesus Christ!

Scriptures

  • 1 Corinthians 1:10-17
  • 1 Corinthians 3:1-23

1 CORINTHAINS — Part 1

I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.

1 Corinthians 9:22b

The city of Corinth was a tough place, let alone a tough place to start a congregation! Every vice and sin was in abundance.

But Paul had a love for these people and their situation – even as he chastised, taught, and reminded them about “Christ Crucified,” living for others, the Resurrection, and more!

This is an excellent book and we can learn a lot from being in it!
