What’s Your Legacy? [All Saints’ Sunday]

For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.

Relevation 7:17

Leaving a ‘legacy.’

It’s something many think about and some strive to accomplish; but what kind of legacy should we be leaving – or looking forward to?

When we get down to it, it won’t be too long into the future when everyone who would remember us has also died – and most of our life and story along with it. Instead of bemoaning that, perhaps we should focus on a true legacy that will really matter – sharing Jesus! If people know and remember Him, and we were able to play some small part of that, that’s a legacy that worth leaving!

And our reward? It’s not to be remembered here by a few, but to be able to “serve God day and night in His temple” where He “will be [our] shepherd, …guide [us] to springs of living water,” and “will wipe away every tear.”

That’s a legacy worth leaving!

Scriptures

  • Revelation 7:2–17

“This Old House”

Restoring an old house can be fraught with problems.

Show us Your steadfast love, O LORD, and grant us Your salvation.

Psalm 85:7

Often it becomes a “money pit.” Sometimes you have to gut the house down to the studs. Sometimes even to the very foundation!

Our sins make us dilapidated crumbling (even if we don’t know it).

Our restoration must start with prayer and confession.

Often it means our attitudes and habits must be torn down to the studs – or even our very foundation!

May that Foundation be Jesus!

In Him only are we restored! In Him only are we saved! In Him only is our everything!

Come, Lord Jesus!

SCRIPTURE:

Independence Day

We can be very myopic in our view of the world and our culture.

Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

2 Corinthians 6:2b

We tend to not look beyond it and to judge matters according to it.

In fact, often we tend to judge God and His Word in light of culture, politics, or parties instead of the proper way around!

How perverse! How ridiculous! How idolatrous!

On this day when we celebrate the independence of our nation, let us not forget to celebrate the true, eternal, material freedom we have in Jesus!
